But it has its high points. This very nice gentleman brought in his ‘08 CLK500 for a service this morning, and asked if we’d service his “other Mercedes” this afternoon. This is the “other Mercedes.” Needless to say, this is not what I was expecting.

Interestingly, and as with !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ’s SLS, this car has already had its transaxle replaced, with only 5200 miles on it. I noticed it looked less weathered than the surrounding components, and showed some sealant that was a bit sloppier than I’ve come to expect from the factory. I asked the owner about it and he confirmed the replacement. People appreciate when you notice things like that unbidden.

Also interesting and surprising to see the body sealer unpainted on the underside, usually this stuff is painted over. AMGTech could probably answer this, but I wonder if it’s left unfinished to better facilitate inspection for flaws or chassis issues.

Dem brakes is nice

Well, 6.2 if we’re being pedantic...

Note how far back the engine is, and the massive dry sump tank ahead of it.

Not a bad place to be, I love the classic color combination of medium gray over red. For an otherwise flashy car, it’s nicely restrained and traditional.

I believe the excess of sealer is mainly to reduce the oxidation and corrosion of the aluminum surfaces that might be exposed to road debris. The car isn’t going to rust, but atmosphere still effects it, especially in areas that might see abrasion from particulates.

Probably true. I wasn’t so much surprised to see so much of it as to see it unpainted.

I’m more surprised that someone would blow $5,400 on the carbon fiber engine cover you only see when the hood is up intead of the $6,400 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen system that replaces the standard 100-watt you’d find in a base C-Class of the time.

That’s not standard? Interesting. I’d definitely have gone for the stereo.

Can we go back to the time when engines didnt have covers altogether? Id be okay with that.

If you didn’t spring for the covers (I didn't) you can see a lot more of the engineering that went into the car.

I just wish the velocity stacks were visible. Everything is better with velocity stacks, and more better when you can see them.

Unfortunately, I don’t know the answer to that. But I like Battery Tender Unnecessary’s idea. There is also a possibility that’s it’s done this way for multiple reasons, such as weight savings (paint can be surprisingly heavy over a large enough surface, and every ounce counts) and your inspection idea.
